Fly Fishing Guides in New Mexico

April 31, 2018 All Fly Fishing Report

OUR DRY CONDITIONS CONTINUE. SOME MOISTURE BUT STILL THE DRIEST WINTER I CAN REMEMBER. THE RESEVOIRS ARE IN GOOD SHAPE AND THE IRRIGATORS WILL NEED A LOT OF WATER THIS YEAR SO THE BEST FISHING SHOULD BE EARLY AND HOPE FOR A GOOD MONSOON SEASON. THE OTTER CONTROVERSY CONTINUES AND WE HAVE SEEN LOTS OF OTTER SIGN IN THE UPPER RIO GRANDE BY UTE MOUNTAIN AND THRUOUT THE GORGE. SCAT PILES HAVE SHOWN THEY SEEM TO BE EATING MOSTLY CRAWFISH.

RED RIVER. 64CFS. I HAVE BEEN DOWN HERE HALF A DOZEN TIMES THIS YEAR AND THERE ARE FISH BUT I HAVE SEEN ONLY ONE FISH OVER 12" AND NO SPAWNING ACTIVITY. LAST TIME ON MARCH22 I ENCOUNTERED 30 FISH WITH THE LARGEST BEING 11". THE BUGS HAVE BEEN SPARSE ALSO BUT THE GRAVEL HAS LOTS OF NYMPH LIFE. IT SEEMS THE MORE MATURE NYMPH MAY HAVE SUFFERED THE SAME FATE AS THE LARGER FISH [OTTERS? YELLOW MUD?] MY PREDICTION IS THE RIVER WILL RETURN QUICKLY AS THIS FERTILE STREAM GROWS FISH QUICKLY.

RIO GRANDE: 310CFS IN CERRO AND 483CFS IN PILAR. THE FLOW HAS RISEN AND CLARITY BECOMES AN ISSUE. THERE ARE PLENTY OF BUGS BUT SOME DAYS IT SEEMS LIKE THEY ARE QUITE PICKY. WE HAVE BEEN FISHING DRY ONLY BUT I AM SURE A DROPPER [CADDIS EMERGER] WOULD PRODUCE.WE WERE ON THE RIVER AT 4PM ON 4/6 AND FISH WERE RISING TO #16 CADDIS pTETTY GOOD UNTIL TOO DARK TO SEE. WE WERE DOWN ON 3/29 AND THERE WERE A FAIR AMOUNT OF BUGS AROUND IN THE PM WE SAW VERY FEW RISERS. WE DID TAKE SOME FISH ON BAETIS NYMPHS FISHED BEHIND A CADDIS DRY. THERE WERE SOME CADDIS ON THE WATER, NOT MANY BUT SOON COME. NO FISH TOOK  THE DRY. WE FISHED IN THE GORGE ON 4/3. MORE CADDIS BUT STILL NO FISH RISING. THE "HATCH" IS DIFFERENT THIS YEAR WITH SPARSE BUGS THRUOUT THE BOX BUT NOT THE BLANKET HATCH WE SEE MANY YEARS. HAVE THE OTTERS EATEN ALL THE CADDIS TOO. NO MOTIVE BUT ALSO NO ALIBI. WE DID TAKE SOME FISH ON CADDIS EMERGERS BUT OVERALL IT WAS SLOWER THAN EXPECTED AS THE CONDITIONS [FLOW AND CLARITY WERE PERFECT.

CIMARRON: 5CFS FROM THE DAM AND 8CFS IN UTE PARK. THIS USED TO BE A GOOD SPRING STREAM BUT THERE NEEDS TO BE AT LEAST 15CFS FROM THE DAM TO MAKE IT WORTHWHILE. PRAY FOR THE BROWNS OF THE CIMARRON.

COSTILLA: NO RELEASES YET FROM THE DAM HBUT WITH THE MEAGER SNOPACK IT SHOULD START IN APRIL. WE FISHED IN AMALIA ON 4/1 AND DID VERY WELL ON SMALL MAYFLY NYMPHS FISHED BEHIND A DRY. THE SIZE OF THE FISH WAS IMPRESSIVE [12-16"] THE VALLE VIDAL WILL BE OPEN THIS YEAR WITH WORK COMPLETED ON THE REMOVAL OF THE OLD VEE-DAMS THAT WERE PUT IN IN THE 80'S TO SLOW THE FLOW FOR MORE FISH HABITAT. I'VE SEEN THE WORK AND IT LOOKS GOOD SO THE VALL IS BASICALLY A NEW STREAM. THEY STILL PLAN TO CONTINUE THE CUTTHROAT PROJECT IN 2019 WITH A CLOSURE AFTER KILLING ALL THE FISH NEXT WINTER TO REINTRODUCE GENTICALLY PURE CUTTIES IN THE SPRING OF 2019.

CULEBRA: 25-30CFS. LOW FLOW BUT THERE ARE SOME BUGS AND WE DID OK ON 3/26 WITH PARA ADAMS FISHING TO RISING FISH. SMALL BAETIS NYMPHS FISHED BEHIND A LARGER DRY WORKED ALSO AS THE RISERS WERE FEW AND FAR BETWEEN. THE FISH ARE STILL IN THEIR WINTER HOLES. IRRIGATION SEASON MAY START EARLY THIS YEAR WITH THE LOW SNOPAK

CONEJOS: STILL TOO EARLY FOR THE BUNNY. IT SHOULD BE EARLY THIS YEAR AND JUNE STONES AND DRAKES COULD MAKE THIS THE PLACE TO BE.

CHAMA: ABIQUIU: 200CFS. NOW YOURE TALKIN. GOOD FLOW. POUNDMEISTERS WITH AN INDICATOR IS MY GO TO RIG AT THIS LEVEL. I HAVEN'T BEEN OVER YET BUT THIS IS A SEXY FLOW
