2003 Rio Grande Fly Fishing Report Archives
Historically
the Rio Grande fished best in the Fall{September-October} and maybe 2 years
out of 10, when runoff was low or later than usual we have the Caddis Hatch
which starts in mid to late April. The mild dry winters of the late 90's
have made this an almost annual event and we have been seeing the first bugs
in the first week of April. In September our summer rains subside and with
the end of the irrigation season in Colorado flows stabilize and fishing
is the best of the year on the Rio.
Spring: First Caddis
spotted in Pilar on 4/2. In April flows were 80-120cfs and fishing was great
in the Box thru May. On Good Friday, 4/18,
a client got a 21" Brown on a Prince nymph early in the day and 2 18" Browns
later on Caddis dries. Lots of top water action later in the day and we took
a bunch of Browns 13-18". I didn't see any noticeable damage to fish from
continued low flows and all fish were fat and healthy. Water temps remained
in the low 60*s until June and fishing continued excellent.. D&D { Moth
and Caddis larva dropper} or a double nymph rig {weighted large nymph with
a Caddis dropper} worked well.
Fall: Flows in August were about
50cfs {State Line}but temps got into the high 60*s by mid afternoon and fishing
dropped off. Not prime yet. September
was excellent with flows about 60cfs and Rita camped at Big Arsenic for 5 days{
9/25-9/30}and fished up and down a mile or so and caught over 200 fish {guesstimate}.
Again D&D combos were the best method to hit the smaller pocket water that
holds some nice fish. She got a few Cutbos to 20" but mostly Browns 13-18".
October was windy on most days which made fishing more difficult but the first
half of the month was great on calm days. We got some snow around the middle
of the month and it seemed to slow fishing considerably.
