2002 Rio Costilla Fly Fishing Report Archives

The Valle Vidal section of the Costilla opens on July 1st to facilitate elk calving in the park. Flows on the Costilla are regulated from Costlla Resevoir for irrigation downstream and unlike other irrigation impoundments they have a schedule of releases. High flows are Monday-Thursday and low flows from Friday-Sunday.. Flows between 30-100cfs are best but high flows have often been higher than 100cfs and low flows less than 30cfs.

July: Long term drought has drasticly reduced water levels in Costilla Resevoir. Flows in July never got above 30cfs but water was clear and fishing fair thru the month on dry flies {Stimulator-Caddis -PMDs}.Lots of fishing pressure and low flows made for tough fishing.

August: By August the Resevoir was almost empty and the outflow was was murky with lots of debris in the stream. Water temps got into the high 60*s for the first time in my memory. Fishing was poor and they shut off the flow on 9/4.
